Of Light and Dark

by Frank Cavano, MD

Easy to awaken from darks dreams of
triumph or sweats, of wish or fear and
rise to exclaim these were not the real.
Yet, let the eyes, illuminated by blaze
of sun, fall upon an ant or an apple or
a lover and the mind insists reality has
been found and lasts ‘til covered orbs
draw near, once again, the days’ night.

Still, can that which eyelids cancel or
the night denies be more real than the
dreams of a darkened room? Will the
juice of a peach upon the chin paint a
reality after the wiping away or can a
rhapsody prove that what is heard in
the light of day remains as the reality
of life when the final note has faded?

If, then, neither eye or ear or skin the
real reveal what then remains to point
the way to reality? Could that which
truly is alive be that on which change
and its measurer, time, has no effect?
Could the daily dance of day and night
be from a magicians hand and eternal
Spirit, ever Itself, be all of life awake?
