A cup of tea can help you feel better. Really it can. Seems too simple doesn’t it? Well, consider this: prehistoric tribes, the hunter-gatherer type, added seeds, berries, leaves, roots, and bark to their diets. This began the experiments of which ones were edible and ultimately which plant parts had healing properties. A tea made from the bark of the white willow tree was found to ease aches, pains and fevers. This led to the development of aspirin. Time and time again, archaeologists have found medicinal herbs carefully preserved in the burial sites of ancient civilizations. We all know that the most important things went with you to the burial site. So think again about your choice of medicine!
The use of herbs as a means of healing the sick is found throughout history. If you had the plague walking through your door…grabbing a pinch of dried herbs and some boiling water was the quickest and most convenient strategy. Now, could herbs have really healed sufferers from the plague? Hmmm….check up on a recipe called the “Four Thieves Vinegar” and it makes you wonder. Can a cup of tea be enough? Is a cup of coffee enough for a jolt of caffeine? It is a matter of perception. We have become so accustomed to the routine of doctor’s appointments, prescriptions and pharmacies that it is ingrained in us that to heal, it must be time consuming, expensive and somewhat complicated. Not so.
So do you think that herbal medicine is only for the ….how should I say this….the “earthy” type? Wrong again. Matter of fact, the trend is changing to one of natural inclinations. Taking responsibility for your own health and healing is the “cutting edge.” I hear that Oprah loves chai tea, Scarlett Johansson enjoys blackberry sage tea, and Sienna Miller partakes in green tea from time to time. And you thought you couldn’t be cool…tsk tsk! All of these teas have healing properties and I’m sure their diva sippers are very aware of them.
Teas can be the easiest way to go – begin by learning some basics and rebuild your medicine cabinet. Build a natural medicine cabinet. The very act of sitting with a warm cup of healing tea is soothing, calming and restorative. Maybe its summer and the heat is unbearable…can’t get off that easy. Herbal tea can be iced and enjoyed throughout the day! You can even ice a stress blend, add some fruit slices and share with the office. Tea is portable, attractive, trendy, healing, scrumptious and simple.
Medicinal tea is a great gift for those you really care about…I don’t see you wrapping acetaminophen up in a bow… nope… not happening. Rethink a cup of tea when the next headache arrives. Whip out a materia medica, blend the herbs, steep the tea and help is on the way. It really can be as simple as a cup of tea.
